The recent news of former New Zealand international Jerry Seuseu's retirement has made me ponder the question, what age should players look at retirement?
Today, sport provides opportunities for players to live the high life, with young scouted players offered contracts which often include a job in the off season, accomodation, car, the list goes on and on. But should players feel the need to continue on after the torment of their body, injury after injury has been inflicted time after time.
Surely, the ability to gain a large pay packet and reasonable living circumstances should allow players to retire well before their bodies need to be. Older players, such as Joey john's and Alfie Langer suffer/suffered injuries time after time, yet they keep coming back for more.
Sure, the love of the game brings these great players back week after week, but is it really worth putting your body on the line day after day. The average player would perhaps peak during mid thirties, experience gained from than, so why not retire before thirty when the body is run down and they still have the chance of experience a different job?
