The Big Bender

May 29th 2006 05:50
Shock, horror, joy, despair. Just some of the feelings from this weekends rugby results from both NRL and Rugby Union.

The Weekend showed how well developed union is as a pre-super 14 outfit. Sydney University faced the final with Eastwood at Eastwood on the weekend, proving that the home side does have an advantage. The students were unfortunately beaten 17-10 with an impressive game with plenty of big hits played by both teams! Including a match turner by Eastwoods number 8 completely thumping Uni's number 15, Nigel Staniforth who had trouble with the pressure kicks towards the end.

Eastwood 17 (B Wakely C Donnelly tries T Donnelly 2 goals pen goal) bt Sydney University 10 (M Griffin try N Staniforth goal pen goal) at TG Millner Field.

The big game of the weekend and perhaps the talking point was the super 14 final between the Crusaders and the Hurricanes which proved difficult for everybody to see. A heavy fog swamped the ground limiting the view even from the front row of seats, as the commentators struggled to see across the other side of the field. Many fans left the stadium to watch the footage on TV however prooving not to be any better as it was a poor game to watch due to lack of visibility. The Crusaders eventually toppling over the Hurricanes 19-12 in a game which saw only one try given.

Crusaders 19 (Casey Laulala try, Daniel Carter 4 pen, con) bt Hurricanes 12 (Jimmy Gopperth 2 pen, Piri Weepu pen, David Holwell pen). Half-time: 6-3.

GPS rugby is once again off to a flyer for St Joseph's College during the weekend with the Cerese and Blue Soldiers taking an easy 62-5 win over Newington on Saturday, showing what a strong outfit the Marist college has once again. In other games, Scots defeated Sydney High 56-0, St Ignatius beat Sydney Grammar 27-17 and Shore beat The King's School 24-14.

In ISA matches, St Patrick's defeated Chevalier 57-0, St Pius upset Oakhill 20-12, Kinross Wolaroi downed St Andrews 22-8 and St Stanislaus defeated St Augustines 52-12. Rumour is since Gilbert footballs were no longer included in St Stanislaus line-up, more concentration on the Summit of their football has become possible as the non-GPS school suffers pre-season lossess once again to St Josephs. We bow our heads in sorrow.

My apologies about stating the the Sting played Forest on the weekend. Unfortunately the Sting suffered another loss going down to Campelltown in dismal conditions on a somewhat already upturned oval. The colts battled with slippery hands between the half-back and fly-half. For two who shared so much before, and with the fate of the team rested on their shoulders by the dark one, their hunt and grandslam for the win was not to be.

The NRL saw the Dragons, Raiders, Broncos, Sharks, Storm, Eels and Tigers take wins over the Knights, Cowboys, Bulldogs, Warriors, Panthers, Roosters and Rabbitohs over the weekend, once again showing how hard it is to pick a winner at the office.

Thats the weekend wrap be sure to see what ups and downs happen during the week as injuries may or may not come throughout.
