Rugby for Rubies

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Is a player really worth over $40,000 a game?

The news today and sport center’s itself on the rapid need for expansion of our three great sports; Rugby Union, Rugby Leauge, and AFL. However I often ponder the questions, are we following the commercial prosperity of America but gaining larger contracts for our better players?

For players itself this topic is one of ‘treading lightly’, as yet our player clubs contain a maximum salary cap, whereby the whole team Is capped at a certain payment and must be divided within the team. Yet, players being offered 1.5million for a season, means some players will be getting the tough end of the deal. Will this mean changing codes of football to find where the larger money is? Follow the news headlines because yes is the answer.

Growing up playing football I could not find it in my heart to change codes, you simply play the game you love, you watch it, live it, sleep it. Every recess and lunch you talk/play/laugh about stories to do with ‘your’ game. Perhaps the players today forget their true spirit and where their heart lives, following money and diversifying their skill to another game. We have players from league going to union, union to league, league to AFL, AFL to league, union to NFL... the list goes on and on. One of the AFL’s best kickers turned to NFL in America, he now comes on for a period between 4-6 minutes a game to kick for goal, I mean, surely this is a prime example of pennies over pride.

The question is will children grow up thinking about their pocket than the love of their game?

What would you do if your favourite player turned sour?

personally, I like to see players playing for little money. Then you know it's for the love of the game.

In America, basketball and football have become massive cash industries and, as a result, the players have turned into prima donnas.
