Footy Times - November 2007

Big Willie Mason is finally free of the ol' ball-n-chain.... his NRL club, the Canterbury Bulldogs, has decided to let Mason talk to other clubs and leagues if he wishes to leave the Bulldogs.

Mason has always been a big power forward, damaging opponents unfortunate enough to stand in his way. If he were a Marvel comic character, he'd be Juggernaut, complete with the Juggernaut's classic line.

Reportedly, Mason has had a falling out with the Bulldogs over management's decisions to stifle Mason's other interests, namely a boxing match. Additionally, Mason missed a club luncheon, which he was fined for.

Mason, why you missing all that free food? You're a big boy - suck it up, sit at the table, sit next to the pretty ladies with the deep, foreboding cleavage and tuck into that lobster salad.

Johns contemplated suicide

November 5th 2007 01:50
Feeling down about having a good time, former Newcastle Knights captain, Andrew Johns, admitted that he thought about taking his own life after his arrest for possession of an ecstasy tablet earlier this year.

Australian society idolizes its sports figures, but it's prudent to remember that the athletes are human, too, capable of making errors and prone to bad judgment. Footy stars inevitably go from being young kids to instantaneous celebrities, and the rocket to fame doesn't guarantee them maturity.

After years of being lauded as one of the best players in history, Andrew Johns admitted that he never felt comfortable with the stature of 'Joey' Johns. Isolated even while being applauded, he turned to drugs and alcohol.

From the article:

""I've carried the guilt for years that the perception of my life has been such a lie," he wrote.

"To be brutally honest - I hated 'Joey' Johns. I hated the superstar-type figure I was perceived to be and I hated as much the person I really was.

"Now, I am finally comfortable with who I am as a person.""
