Footy Times - October 2007

Melbourne Storm win the NRL Grand Final
It was like a haughty game of Operation, with the poor patient played by the Manly Sea Eagles, operated on by the sadistic Melbourne Storm.

The Storm picked apart Manly by a score of 34-8.

I was watching the game at Sydney's Northern Beaches, prime Sea Eagles territory. Little kids skipped down the street in their jerseys, and the atmosphere was electric with anticipation.

Anticipation would turn to despair, however, as the Storm picked apart every facet of the game. Terrifying breaks through the line. Indefatigable defense. Superior kicking game. And, most of all, the belief that they could break the line.

When Matt King managed to bowl over a Manly player to score at halftime, the oppressive surge of momentum was too much for the Sea Eagles, who looked terrified with the ball. Driving home after the game, the northern suburbs were forlornly dark and solemn, as if there was no game on at all.
